Apple Pie à la Mode Farm Tour

Two Days and One Night

Visit a few of Frederick County’s farms, wineries and orchards for a unique tour experience only Frederick County can offer!

Day One

Catoctin Mountain Orchard, Pryor's Orchard and Summer Creek Farm

Begin your day with a guided tour at Catoctin Mountain Orchard.  Owned by the Black family since 1961, this family farm started out as small retail farm and has been expanding ever since.  Today the farm covers 100 acres and is divided into 80% orchard and 20% vegetables/other produce. The enclosed “open-air” market makes it an ideal place for the farm to showcase its fruits and vegetables for the public to purchase.  In addition, visitors can walk through the Flower Garden and “Cut Your Own” for a unique bouquet.

Possibly the most favorite addition to the farm has been the bakery. Your group will have plenty of time to peruse the wide variety of pies, cakes and cookies baked fresh right on the farm!

Our next stop is nearby Pryor’s Orchard, family owned since 1905. Over three generations, the farm has slowly transformed from a dairy operation to orchards. The market is located in the original barn built in 1940. The farm specializes in cherries, blueberries, plums, apricots, peaches, apples and nectarines. Also of interest on the property is the largest eastern cottonwood tree in Maryland, towering at 92 feet high.

Lunch can be arranged at the historic Cozy Restaurant, where your group can enjoy country dining at its best.

After lunch, we will visit Summer Creek Farm, a USDA certified organic farm. Embark on a guided tour of the farm’s 27 acres, which produce 30 types of vegetables. In addition, they also raise laying hens and grow over 15 acres of small grains, including wheat, soybeans and barley. Honeybee hives maintained on the farm not only help to pollinate, but produce sweet honey for sale.  Products from Summer Creek Farm are sold locally in various farmers markets and are also featured in fine local restaurants, such as Café Nola, VOLT, and Moxie.

The farm offers educational opportunities for your group with advanced reservations. Possible topics for classes include: organic gardening, plant starting and creating your own rain barrels. Please contact the farm directly to schedule an exciting seminar for your group!

In the evening, enjoy dinner in one of the local restaurants serving cuisine using locally produced meat, fruits and vegetables.

Day Two

Dowtown Historic Frederick, McCutcheon's Factory Store, South Mountain Creamery and the Frederick Wine Trail

Start your morning in historic downtown Frederick. A step-on guided tour of Frederick's historic district is the perfect way to take in the view from the motorcoach as your guide tells the stories of our town. From our famous "clustered spires," to notable Federal-style architecture, this tour offers a tranquil way to enjoy your Frederick County experience. With just the right mix of historical vision complemented by homespun local lore, a guided tour is guaranteed to make Frederick's colorful past come alive for your group.

Your tour will include a stop at the nationally acclaimed Community Bridge Mural, where an artist has transformed a plain concrete bridge into a permanent illusion of an old stone and ivy covered bridge.

Another stop on your tour is a visit to McCutcheon’s Apple Products, a family owned and operated business stretching over four generations.  The Factory Store offers a variety of homemade jams, jellies, apple products and salad dressings too! Take some time to look around the shop and sample their delicious products.

In the afternoon, visit South Mountain Creamery, located in Middletown. This dairy farm offers home delivery of dairy and meat products, including ice cream, to over 3000 residents in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Daily, one can observe the milking process as well as participate in bottle-feeding the baby calves.

Your day ends with a tour, tasting and a lesson on winemaking at a one of six wineries located on the Frederick Wine Trail, Maryland's first official wine trail.
