Frederick County’s early prosperity was due in part to its location on The National Pike, America’s first national highway, which originated in Baltimore, Maryland. The town of New Market, Maryland, founded in 1793, is a prime example of many American communities that benefited from the construction of this strategic road, intended to spur westward movement. Like The City of Frederick, New Market became a popular stopover for travelers in need of food, lodging, and services during the height of the National Pike. Today, New Market’s main street retains its mid-19th century charm and offers contemporary visitors historic architecture and a variety of restaurants, antique and specialty shops.

During the past twenty years, Frederick County has become home to three prominent wineries. Berrywine Plantations / Linganore Winecellars, Elk Run Vineyards, and Loew Vineyard each offer a wide array of quality wines, some award-winning, that are sold on premises as well as in restaurants and wine shops throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Vineyard tours, tastings, and a large number of summer and autumn special events are hosted at each, making for a fun winery daytrip.

From Mt. Airy, you’re just 25 minutes away from Baltimore, Maryland. Stay with us and see it all!
